Maximize Your Digital Reach (Contd…): Factors affecting your decision for a responsive design

In the final series of this blog let’s now analyze all discussion points we had in earlier series; i.e. the final decision to say a yes or no to responsive design. Rather it’s not plainly easy to either opt yes or simply say no. Even the social networking site giant Facebook retracted its responsive design journey from HTML 5 to having a native app mainly due to the reason that the quality was not coming ‘through’ on the back of HTML5.

A very famous web designer and developer was once working on researching the list of best responsive websites, and in his research he concluded that a mobile viewer always expects he will find whatever he is looking for and that too in an easy fashion with fastest response. There are different reasons and situations for picking your mobile to surf. One you are not reachable to your static device always (desktop and laptop), or you are habitual to surf on your mobile. Whatever be the reason, users will always anticipate and feel that the website is designed specifically for their usage regardless of device, screen size, or connection speed.

So the decision should not be based upon to go for a ‘yes’ to move with the tech trending times or just to participate in the race. It depends on the need of the hour to find out the most innovative way to suit your requirements. For instance in the case for mobile commerce companies, the solution may vary depending on how their customers like to shop – on mobile web or through a native app. So a customer in a hurry to buy something fast would obviously choose to have done that through an app instead of surfing on the mobile device. Similarly for other businesses like TV Channels, responsive design is just used as a subset of the content available vis a vis their full browser versions as the quality of the videos may be pixelated on mobile devices as compared on the web view. So rather than making the mobile channel heavy, it’s better to host the mobile version with the ‘most sought’ information only.

Depending on what your business and viewers demand, opt for the right strategy. Remember, the path of opting a responsive design should not be objected to just fitting your site on a mobile screen, rather ensuring that all functions are made available on mobile version too! Like a restaurant’s mobile website is expected to guide the user with the locations and maps of the exact location, instead of just depicting the location address. Moreover things like the ‘ease’ of navigation, sensitivity of the touch, UI friendliness are other must have factors that your mobile site should be equipped with.

So in nutshell, the decision for having a responsive design should be taken from strategic point and not the tactical one.
